Bringing in the May

Siren School is readying for its Grande Opening and inaugural season, which takes place at the time of year in which are celebrated Beltane, May Day, and Spring's promise of new life.

In Britain, the festivities attending the advent of Spring have a century-spanning history. Beltane, originally a Celtic observance, marked the end of winter and the coming of summer and the cattle were turned out to their summer grazing pastures. During Britain's subsequent Roman occupancy, a May feast worshipping Flora, the goddess of flowers, and Maia, the goddess of spring for whom the month of May is named was introduced into the seasonal mix. The mixture of these celebrations became May Day, along with the traditions that accompany it.

The term "bringing in the May" referred to going out into the woods and fields on May Eve (April 30), to gather flowers and foliage to be used as Maypole decorations. It also offered the opportunity for amorous trysts while the 'mayers' were unchaperoned at night in the woods.

By the Middle Ages, a Maypole could be found in virtually every English village. Originally, they were denuded trees, awaiting decoration by the revelers. On May Day itself, the Maypole served as the focal point for the event's dancing and games... rather like the gathering of people in Time Square on New Year's Eve.

Based on the trending religious proclivities and morality of the generations since, Maypole festivities have waxed and waned in popularity. In recent times, Maying was embraced by middle-class Victorians who longed for the pleasant joys of a simpler time. In their hands the celebration was stripped of its more hedonistic elements and repackaged as a sweet little children's activity. That is when the Maypole became attached to ribbons and Morris dances. Scholars have suggested that the exaggerated leaps typical in Morris dancing, were used to promote crop growth, just as the Romans once attempted with the clashing of sticks representing the battle between Summer and Winter.

The foregoing touches on just one aspect of the rich, impassioned and symbolism-laden celebration of Spring's coming. It is a practice that has traveled across both centuries and continents. And it is one to which we hope to do justice as we bring in the May on April 28th, 2012. Won't you join us in the giddy celebration of our maiden voyage?

May Day Fae Day - Grande Opening Celebration

...It's time they danced again.

Come one come all to the May.... a few days early, as we celebrate the commencement of Siren School's inaugural session. On Saturday, April 28th, 2012 at 12 noon we will observe Grande Opening ceremonies, complete with Maypole dancing and complimentary afternoon tea. [see description below for details]

Before and after that, the weekend will be dedicated to our first event, a Fairy Fete and Hobbit & Elven experience. All of the festivities will take place in coastal Long Beach, CA where the fae folk dance and live in harmony hidden from the eyes of men. Getaway includes faerie and Middle Earth lore and language, optional craft, dance or swordplay instruction, props, performance, refreshments and professional videography. The Night Before (7-10pm): If you are able to flutter in on the breeze the evening before, please join us for dinner at Shenandoah at The Arbor.

Session Pre-requisite: ability to sit on wooden benches out of doors and to walk flat nature park trails, fae folk dance instruction optional; aside from the grande opening celebration, the session will be held in a private space, closed to the public. Day #1 - The Fae & May

A wee bit o breakfast (8-9am): For our overnight faeries
Blessing & Grace (9-9:15) We will begin with a quiet pause of gratitude for this auspicious moment... as we commence with our first class
Quick Cross of the Veil (9:15-10am): Shhhhhh... Do you hear it? The rustling of leaves at your feet? The breeze through the trees overhead? The trickle of an unseen brook? They're all around us -- signs of fairy life. This morning we will take a wiki look at the rich and compelling history of the fae folk as we prepare to revel 'realm style'
FanFairy (10am-midday): In true fairy form, we will prepare for the pageantry of our Grande Opening by creating a Maypole together, plus learning a Processional song & Maypole Dance. Includes mid-session coffee break, served with Faerie's Finest sugars
May Day Fae Day Celebration & Tea (12noon-3pm): Bringing in the May Processional; craft workshops in floral May Cone making, wearable Wreath-making, and Fairy Wing embellishing; Crowning of the Queen & christening the school; research your Faerie Genealogy; learn the meaning of flowers; MayPole Dance; Blend your own Tea; Afternoon Tea buffet; Faerie Cake Decorating; fairy face painting
Merry Mayking (3-5pm): We will rest our fairy wings while leisurely learning more about the about the secret lives of the fae folk... you may use this time to finish any of undone fairy crafts and rest assured... there will be more fairy cake to nibble!
Respite (5-7pm): Being around humans all day, no doubt your feet have grown tired from all the walking. You may use this time either to put those feet up and relax, &/or treat them to a Painted Pixie Pedicure spa treatment
Dinner in the Garden (7-8:30pm): For those staying with us through the mid-season's night, we will dine onsite by fairylight, supping on some very unusual trompe l'oeil fare, enjoying one another's company and exchanging fairy tales
Sweet Slumbers (8:30-10pm): Drift off to sleep with a viewing of A Mid-Summer Night's Dream

Day #2 - Journey to Middle Earth - a long awaited adventure
9am-3:30pm for basic session (optional breakfast served at 8am)

1st Breakfast (8-9am): For our overnight revelers
Morning in the Shire (9-11am): Hullo Hobbits! Welcome to the most hospitable place in all of Middle-Earth [suspend disbelief here]. This morning we will sit on the grass under shady trees as we pour through the pages of the Red Book to dig deep into the mythology and customs of the land. Feel free to go barefoot and wiggle your toes in the grass. Includes mid-session 2nd breakfast break.
Elevenses-Lunch Break (11am-12noon): A typical shire meal, Green Dragon style, with something for heft-conscious hobbits
Afternoon visit to Valinor's Gardens of Lorien (12-1:30pm): Travel to the exclusive realm of the elves [if only in our minds] to learn their lyrical language and ages-old history. There will be bench-sitting and park strolling with views of fountains and all manner of friendly fowl. Includes mid-session Lembas bread break
Afternoon Options (1:30-3pm): Get crafty embellishing an elven brooch or tiara, and/or take a choreographed dance or fencing lesson for performance and exhibition tonight
Respite (3-4:30pm): Treat yourself to a hobbit foot massage spa treatment, enjoy some personal time, or have your ears done in preparation of this evening's performance. Professional makeup & hair/wig styling available from 3:30-4:30pm

Imagine sailing the seven internet seas in search of mythical creatures, stopping only to stock up on provisions, collect treasures and gaze on beautiful objects and images. That is what you will experience when you embark on Siren Quest.

What exactly are sirens, you ask?
Are they mermaids? Women with wings? Birds with female heads? Seductive songstresses? Beguiling temptresses? There have been countless theories, but few facts. Find out for yourself as you travel to exotic web locales and garner to-die-for trinkets in search of the elusive.... siren.

Due to launch into the depths on Valentine's Day 2012, Siren Quest is an online sort of amazing race game activity. Players will receive instructions, visit theme-applicable websites to pick up clues, answer questions to advance and figure out where the heck to go next... that sort of thing. Participants will have inside info on siren ware and service specials, and vie for enviable 'real' prizes.

The 'game' is a fun and adventure-based way to promote artists and businesses that are siren-friendly. It's simple as seaweed and more fun than a cave full of eels. Whether as a player or vendor, we welcome you to come and frolic with us in our search for sirens on our SirenQuest Facebook page.

Nature Nymphs - Temptress Teaser Camp

Get back to nature in this fanciful experience, bursting with fragrance, color and song. After dancing in the fairy ring and flipping your mertail for the first time, we guarantee you will return home a more fully evolved woman, in ways most likely only you will truly understand. Camp sessions include theme history, activities, usually an option or dance or song or musical instrument instruction, activities, crafts, performance, refreshments and professional videography. The Night Before (7-9pm): If you are able to make your way into town the night before, come join us at George's Greek Cafe for a dinner celebrating the birthplace of sirens, ancient Greece.

Day #1 - Water Sprite

9am-3pm for basic session (elective evening activities end around 10pm)

Earlyish Bird Breakfast (8-9am): For our overnight nymphs

Wet Behind the Pointy Ears (9-11am): Dip your toe into the world of the Naiad, an elemental creature featured in mythologies the world over. During the last half of the session you will have the option to jump into the drink to learn the basics of aquatic dance; or stay in the shallow end if you do not wish to dunk. You may also stay high & dry out of the water altogether by trying out the moves on-land. Or you may sneak off to assist with the construction of our edible art lunch. Includes a mid-session Sprite punch break

Eclectic Lunch Break (11am-12noon): Nibble and nosh from our trompe l'oeil garden buffet as you put together your look and accessories for tonight's photo session and performance

Craft Keepsake (12-1pm): Relax among the reeds as you construct flora & fauna streamered hair wreaths for wear tonight
Music is Elemental (1-3pm) All nature nymphs love music and dance, and sprites are no exception. During this session we will introduce our aquatic dance routine for tonight's performance. You may choose to participate on land, in the shallow end, or underwater. Siren singers are invited to a practice session of their own where they will learn the language and lyrics of our song. Musicians will hunt for, and then practice with, a variety of unorthodox 'found' instruments... Everyone gets to blow bubbles! It's like Blue Man group but quirkier and cuter. Includes a mid-session nectar break

Afternoon Respite & Sprite Transformation (3-6pm): Take this time to enjoy any of the following

Day #2 - Genie

Uncorked (9-11am): From smoke to lamps to bottles and wishes, learn all about the fascinating hidden world of the jinn. Includes a mid-session Turkish coffee break

Lunch Break (11am-12:30pm): Sneak away from the oasis with us to have lunch at Boubouffe Grille

Craft Keepsake (12:30-1:30pm): Before we ask our bellies to start dancing, have some fun decorating a pair of genie slippers to wear at home in remembrance of your trip to the desert
By Genies, For Genies (1:30-3:30pm): Unbeknownst to most people, belly dance was not created as a way for women to entice men. It was developed to be performed by and for women. During this session we will introduce our song and belly dance routine for tonight's performance. You may choose to participate as a dancer, singer or drummer The first half of our session will involve the basics of this musical form. The second half of the session will be devoted to learning our song and dance. Siren singers will practice on their own in order to learn the language and lyrics of our song. Musicians may accompany either the singers or dancers. Includes a mid-session Jalab beverage break

Afternoon Respite & Genie Transformation (3:30-6pm): Take this time to enjoy any of the following

The Ring that rules them all (9-11am): The fairy ring is something very real and not to be entered lightly. Learn the age-old and modern-day beliefs about the fae folk. Includes a mid-session flower blossom coffee break

Elevenses Break (11am-12noon): Sample a variety of dishes, each representing a different fairy tale

Craft Keepsake (12-1pm): Before we set to making music, take a moment to stop and smell the tiny roses as you create a miniature fairy garden keepsake
The Faeries' Raison d'Etre (1-3pm): Faeries love dance above all other pursuits -- pure and simple. During this session we will introduce our song and folk dance routine for tonight's performance. You may choose to participate as a dancer, singer or musician. The first half of our session will involve the basics of this musical form. The second half of the session will be devoted to learning our song and dance. Siren singers will practice on their own in order to learn the language and lyrics of our song. Musicians may accompany either the singers or dancers. Includes a mid-session Green Fairy tea break

Afternoon Respite & Faerie Transformation (3-5:30pm): Take this time to enjoy any of the following

Day #4 - Island Girl

Wiki Island Hop (9-11am): No need to charter a plane in order to tour the Pacific Rim. From Hawaii to Tahitia, the Cook Islands to New Zealand, Fiji, Tonga & Somoa we will bask in the beauty and history of true paradise. Includes a mid-session Tupu-anga coffee break

Lunch Break (11am-12:30pm): Let's paddle our outriggers over to Islands for lunch

Craft Keepsake (12:30-1:30pm): Before we start swaying our hips, chanting and drumming, we will take some time to engage in a hopefully reasonable facsimile of the traditional craft of Tapa cloth stamping
Talk to the Hands (1:30-3:30pm): The languid dance form known as hula does more than just entertain, it tells a story and carries on an oral tradition going back centuries. Today you may choose to take instruction in hula, oli (chant), mele (song) or drumming, to be performed this evening. The first half of our session will involve the basics of this art form. The second half of the session will be devoted to learning our song and dance. Chanters and singers will practice on their own in order to learn the language and lyrics of our song. Drummers may accompany either the singers or dancers. Includes a mid-session tropical iced tea break

Afternoon Respite & Wahine Transformation (3:30-6pm): Take this time to enjoy any of the following

Day #5 - Roma Gypsy Queen

9am-3:30pm for basic session (elective evening activities end around 11pm)

Campfire Breakfast (8-9am): For our overnight nymphs

The Hunt is on (9-11am): The gypsies live a nomadic existence, traveling as a way of life, not just when on holiday. We will learn about this fascinating and often misunderstood culture by way of a scavenger hunt. We will even collect the ingredients for tonight's dinner along the way! Includes a mid-session Bulgarian coffee break

Lunch Break (11am-12:30pm): Eclectic delights await at the Gypsy Grill

Craft Keepsake (12:30-1:30pm): We'll rest from our travels by crafting Gypsy Jar Lantern sor if the glass won't travel well, Beaded Bangle Bracelet keepsake
The Universal Language (1:30-3:30pm): The gypsies have had more influence on music throughout the world than most of us could ever imagine. During this session we will introduce our song and Andalusian folk dance routine for tonight's performance -- this dance form was the precursor to Flamenco. You may choose to participate as a dancer, singer or musician (tambourinist, drummer etc). The first half of our session will involve the basics of this dynamic musical form. The second half of the session will be devoted to learning our song and dance. Siren singers will practice on their own in order to learn the language and lyrics of our song. Musicians may accompany either the singers or dancers. Includes a mid-session caravan tea break

Afternoon Respite & Gyspy Transformation (3:30-5:30pm): Take this time to enjoy any of the following

Treat yourself to beads & bells hair embellishing or a Gypsy Foot Massage
Practice our song and dance
Put your feet up and rest a bit
Primp for your evening performance
Professional dressing, hair and makeup available from 4:30-5:30pm

Forgotten Forest Reception & Photo Session (5:30-6:30pm): Enjoy the fruits of the oasis such as dates, figs and apricots while you mingle or wait for your turn to pose for a Professional Photography Shoot in your exotic genie raiment

Gypsy Folk Performance (6:30-7pm): This is no time to hold back. Release your gypsy spirit and let the music send you into a Roma reverie
Travelling Feast (7-9pm): We will dine al fresco by the light of home fires and our lanterns, relishing a different course in a different location... just steps away
Sweet Dreams (9-11pm): For those not yet ready to curl up in their caravan, we will view a delicious movie about a wandering woman... with a bit part by the most irresistible gypsy one might meet... in short, we will watch Chocolat

Day #6 - Mermaid

9am-3pm for basic session (elective evening activities end around 10pm)

Breakwater Breakfast (8-9am): For our overnight nymphs

Go Deep (9-11am): If you thought you'd gone far afield of your normal life already this week, brace yourself for the ultimate siren experience. We will begin our day by debunking the myths about mermaids... such as the myth that asserts they don't exist! Includes a mid-session Starbucks coffee break (you know, the brand with the sea siren logo!)

Lunch Break (11am-12noon): Salad sampler buffet.... mermaids are always watching their curvy figures

Craft Keepsake (12-1pm): Before we enter our liquid lounge we will relax a bit after lunch to create an oceanic necklace or bracelet... or both!
On the Rocks (1-3pm): Mermaids love to be both seen and heard. Whether you choose to flip your fins in the water as an aquatic dancer, or stay on land to show off your human legs while you sing or play the waterpipes, please join in our mersong and dance. Includes a mid-session Nun Chai Sea Salt Tea break

Cherry Blossoms (9-11am): It's time to bloom would-be Geisha girl. This morning we will waste no time in teaching you the ways and meaning of the geisha life. Leave your preconceptions and your shoes at the door please. Includes a mid-morning Sencha tea break
Brief Bento Lunch (11am-12noon): During lunch you may pick your accoutrements for today's Japanese Garden photo shoot. We will provide shoulder wraps for headshot photos. Given the their value & cost, we regret we cannot provide traditional Japanese kimono for each of you, though you are encouraged to bring your own, or we can arrange to order one in advance for you
Geisha Transformation (12-2pm) We will walk you through the entire process of turning yourself into a living porcelain doll including each step of make-up application
Ground transport (2-2:30pm)
Japanese Garden Photo Shoot (2:30-3:30pm): We will visit an actual Japanese garden and koi pond for photos, taking time to feed the fish and enjoy the manicured beauty

Japanese Tea Ceremony (4-5:30pm): Back at our ochaya you will not only learn about the tea ceremony, you will perform it. This is a very abbreviated version - the full ceremony takes hours to complete and years to master

Perhaps you'd like to play Mahjong with a fellow Maiko, or indulge in a Shiatsu Massage spa treatment. If you want to take a nap as the traditional geisha do, you would do so by resting your neck on a takamakura ... think elevated wooden block

Hot Mommas & Apple Pie (9-11am): Reveille! Nothing gave our boys in blue the will to hang on and make it back home like the beautiful women waiting stateside for them. And there were few reminders as iconic as the pin-up photo. Go back with us to the fabulous 40's, a time of great courage and great music. We will conduct our morning lesson as we bake apple pie, from scratch, of course. Includes a mid-morning coffee cake break... we're saving the pie for lunch!

PicKnit Lunch Break (11am-1pm): We're off to the park for a leisurely lunch, during which we will have a knitting session to create beret keepsakes, pompn optional; if you'd like to stretch your gams a bit, feel free to play horseshoes or 'Frisbie'... we'll need our apple pie tins for that

Yes You Can Can! (1-3pm): There are a variété of ways to be a part of the spectacle at the Moulin Rouge. You'll learn how to carry yourself with confident ease and elegant grace. And learn to flirt like crazy with your man. Includes a mid-morning cuppa jo break

Ladies' Luncheon Break (11am-12noon): Savor the flavors of the era with table service becoming of ladies who lunch. In old school tea room style, models will sashay around us as we dine, showing off the fashions of the day

Glamover (12-1pm): This is your chance to define and create your own irresistibly glamorous look, not only for tonight's photo shoot, but for any occasion thereafter. We will share time-honored tips and tricks of the trade, including those used by Hollywood starlets over the last century. We are in the first throes of starting our little siren school, and already I have been nearly barraged with private communiques asking if we will be offering any sort of boudoir instructionals. Evidently, there are scads of women searching for some pointers as to how to perform an absolutely irresistible seduction for their paramours.

And so, we would like to invite you to join us in Salome's Salon for our sensuous, sensual, SeduXtion Series. These are take-no-prisoners temptress classes.... not for the faint of heart, nor shy of flesh. They are pole-ar opposites of what one may encounter at a 'strip joint'. There is a good chance that at least a few of you reading this have bypassed your opportunity to realize your dreams of travelling the world as a prima ballerina. Our le Cygne experience allows you to revisit that dream.... if only for a few hours.

Our Ballet Mistress Madame Rouenska takes her job very seriously. Disappointed in her own dance career, she takes out her angst on her unwitting pupils in true drill sergeant fashion.... She also moonlights as a tea leaf reader. All this adds up to the most uproarious dance class imaginable.

This event runs approximately 4 hours and includes:

Rudimentary dance instruction (emphasis on rude)
Pointers on how to curtsy with class, catch bouquets, feign humility, sign autographs, deal with paparazzi, get free 'stuff' and lock in an infomercial
Feather hair adornment craft keepsake session
Pre-performance poser photo shoot (before you're all sweaty and shiny)
Videotaped prima performance - each dancer will get a brief moment in the spotlight if desired... no pushing, ladies
Glamorous recital reception with finger foods (using the finest fingers on the market), sparkling wine (the key is the glitter), rushin' caviar, and ... wait for it .... a lovely traditional Pavlova dessert

Pre-requisite: ability to participate in the most basic of ballet steps... and look like you mean it. Packing List: comfortable casual attire, practice dance wear and ballet shoes, white or black shirt/top and white or black tights or leggings; byo tutu or borrow one of our scanty ones. It would also be beneficial to know how to spell your name prior to our 'signing autographs' tutorial.

Faerie Field Trip (12-1:30pm): It is time to go visit our local fairy mound to espy the magical doings going on all around. While here we will indulge in a bit of story time, getting to the truth behind the fairy tales, and faemous fae from Titania to Tinkerbell. Be sure to wear dirt-trail-friendly foot wear and be advised, the faeries do not allow refreshments on their premises. Feel free to go barefoot and wiggle your toes in the grass. Includes mid-session 2nd breakfast break.

Garden Variety Lunch Break (11am-1pm): Today's menu includes flower soup, watercress sandwiches... and edible art... which you will learn to create using ingredients found in the garden. In this case the phrase "you can't take it with you" fully applies, but you CAN take plenty of photos, so come prepared
Last Touches (1-2pm): Spruce up your sprite costume by embellishing wrist sashes, a swim cap or head piece for wear during tonight's performance
Afternoon Segment (2-3:30pm): We will add our pixie props to this last pre-performance practice, fine-tuning our moves out of the water before diving back into our liquid ballroom. Singing sirens and musicians will accompany land and aquatic dancers at this practice. Includes a mid-segment break
Sprite Transformation (3:30-6pm): Relax a bit before you get spruced up in your sprite habiliments and prepare for your photo session. Looking for a fun and fabulous way to high kick your fitness regimen into overdrive? Our Dance Diva Sampler getaway, held in coastal Long Beach, CA offers many of the dance styles taught in our Dance Diva Booty Camp, as well as some new ones to keep things interesting for our returning dancers. Instead of taking place over 6 days (as is the case with our camp), this rigorous event runs one wiki weekend with 12 different dance forms taught in 2 days.

You'll get the chance to try types of dance you've always been interested in, as well as learn about some that may be new to you. Each class includes an informative introduction to the dance style as well as isolation movements specific to the genre and combo steps that will be put together to make up a short routine. Come prepared to sweat and smile and workout like no one's watching! (Price options and discounts listed at the bottom of the page.)

Sampler getaway includes dance instruction and props required for selected dance forms. We've also suggested types of items you may choose to bring in order to maximize your experience. Note: the dance styles offered here vary slightly from those included in our 6-day Dance Diva Booty Camp. (Extras listed in rose italics: additional meals, accommodations, spa treatments and optional excursions.)

The Night Before (7-10pm): If you are able to soft shoe your way into town the evening before, please join us for dinner in an atmosphere fit for a diva at la Creperie.

Session Pre-requisite: ability to participate in various styles of dance, some barefoot; session is held in a private space, closed to the public. Packing list: extremely comfortable dance apparel, theme wear, socks and shoes of choice based on the curriculum, towel, evening out attire & overnight items.

Day #1 - 9am-5pm for basic session (elective evening activities end around 10pm)

Bellydance (9-10am) - feel free to bring coin hip scarves, zills (finger cymbals), veils, skirts, hip belts

Hula+ (4-5pm) - feel free to bring a lavalava (pareo), grass skirt, lei, flower for hair, floral wreath, shell anklet, coconut bra, hand tassels, headdress, tea leaf belt
Personal Time (5-7pm)
Suppertime (7-9pm) - Onsite and off your feet! We will dine on light and delicious California Cuisine, family-style
Jacozy (9-9:30pm) - Relax those worked over muscles in a steaming jacuzzi

The Morning After 8-11am

Yoga (10:30-11:45am): Yoga class at Yoga World
Curtsy & wave goodbye (12noon): at last we take our leave... but not to fret... if you miss us too much,, just come back for our full week Dance Diva Booty Camp.... we have a few dance forms not included this past weekend, for your additional enticement
